Ways to Help Pay for a Northwestern Education

Working On Campus

F-1 and J-1 visa holders are eligible to work on campus in part-time positions. (Visa holders are not eligible for jobs funded by the federal work-study program). Work is restricted to 20 hours per week while school is in session but can be more during the summer and vacation periods. Rules of employment are strictly enforced for international students.

Work for Board

Students who do not qualify for Federal Work Study can work 12 hours/week in a Sodexho Campus Services dining hall to satisfy the 19-meal plan.

Become a Community Assistant (CA)

According to the Office of Residential Life, 20% of Community Assistants are international students. Compensation includes free room and board (16-meal plan) and voice mail service during the academic year. Undergraduate students (freshman through senior) who will be enrolled at Northwestern for the entire academic year may apply. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA at the time of hire and must be willing to limit outside time commitments while employed. For more information about the benefits and rewards of becoming a CA, visit www.northwestern.edu/reslife/.

Non-University Affiliated Scholarships

Some international students have been awarded scholarships from sources outside Northwestern such as their government or another agency. Try the following sites for more information:

9Pay

The University's 9Pay plan allows participants to make their tuition and fee payments to Northwestern in nine monthly installments instead of paying large sums at the beginning of each academic term.

Outside Loans

Some students choose to pursue outside loans to finance their education. Citibank offers a loan program called CitiAssist. Programs like this may require an eligible U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-signer.
